Something to be thankful for (David)

Took a trip to Garbage City.  Yes, Garbage City.   This is he place in Cairo, up a hill, where the garbage is sorted and recycled.   And run by Christians.  At the top there are churches in the rock.  Pretty incredible.   Thankful for the incredible work that is done, these with which we just throw things away.

Another Evening in the Khan (David)

We had another great night wandering the Khan.    Spice market, light stores and watched prayer take place on the roof top with all the merchants.  Ate at a newly reopened restaurant and loved it.   Good to get out again!

Main Khan entrance.   Mosque on right with large umbrellas that open and close.  Gift from Saudi Arabia

E's Birthday, several weeks ago (David)

Several weeks ago we took a water taxi to Zamalek for E's birthday.   Zamalek is suppose to be a hip place, many embassies, restaurants and such.   It is an island across from downtown.   We have been there a couple of times, not often due to traffic.

So off we go in the taxi, a motor boat actually.

In the taxi on our way.

View of Nile from behind the boat.

Cairo tower

What used to be tour and entertainment boats, waiting for tourism to pick up again.

Read the sign.  Most military positions have their own clubs for eating and entertainment.

More places along Nile.

A different taxi for crossing the Nile.

Along the way.

We then had lunch, wandered Zamalek and eventually took a land taxi back home.   Quite successful.

Egyptian Wedding (David)

Had the opportunity to attend part of an Egyptian wedding this week.  Yes, week.   It was on a Tuesday.  Middle of the week.   Set to start at 8:00 pm.  Yes 8 pm.   And that was the beginning of differences.  A wonderful cultural experience of celebration.

We arrived with others around 8:15 to a hall which is located on a place for use by military. Restaurant, pool, hotel designated for military people.   With our preapproved passports, in we go.

We wait around for an hour as a couple more people come in and then around 915, we are told to go outside because they are coming.

The groom and bride drive up.  See the groom near the back of the car in the tuxedo.   That is a bouquet of flowers taped to the rear window (they decorate the wedding cars.)

The bride out of the car.   All clapping!   Father is next to bride.

We go inside to the lobby.  The bride goes upstairs and we wait.  They will walk down for photos.

Photo time as they walk down the stairs.

Then lots of drums and singing as we walk about 50 yards or so stopping all the time.  Takes about 30 minutes.  Dancing, singing, laughter!  Called the Zafraa.

Still walking and dancing.  In the far end you can see a canopy which is the entrance to the room for our group.

Dancing, clapping, singing.

Once inside the room, this is where we waited as well, bride and groom sit with her father, two witnesses, and a sheik.
We all watch as words are said and documents are signed.

All is projected onto large screens in the hall.

Then, the groom and father of bride join hands and covered with a veil.  The sheik says words from the Quran in a song form (it seems everyone knows it) and the they are married.

They go to a lighted stage and exchange rings and have a drink.

Having the drink, kinda like red koolaid, represents the sweetness of their life together.

Where they were sitting.

And the dancing begins!

We stayed for a little bit, but around 1045 we left.  Dinner was about to be served and then more dancing.   We had to get home.  Still had two days of work to go!

First Week Year Two (David)

We have had our first week back in Cairo and at work.   Kids to arrive in two days.  We made it through jet lag with several bad sleeps.  Finally we are on track.

Transition back to overseas has been much easier than last year.   Nothing to unpack and knowing where to purchase everything is all the difference.   We even went out to breakfast our first day back.

We spent the week with new teachers and the start of work.  We took advantage of a trip on the Nile and to the pyramids.

New cats out our front door.

My favorite dessert:   Puff pastry filled with custard surrounded by chocolate pudding topped with shaved white chocolate.

Still eating.
